Cruise Description

11 Night Cruise sailing from Athens roundtrip aboard Azamara Pursuit.

Five late stays, one overnight, and ten incredible ports of call to discover—there’s a reason we call it intensive. We start in the place of myths and legends, Athens. Make your way through the heart of this ancient city to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Arch of Hadrian, and of course, the Acropolis.

Take in Mykonos’ sun bleached houses with brilliant blue shutters, vibrant bougainvillea, and 16th century Venetian windmills during your leisurely overnight stay.

Travel to pretty Paros, with its stylish capital, fashionable resort towns and sweet rural villages. With 10,000 years of history to explore, you’re going to need more time. And with Azamara’s signature longer stays, you’ve got it.

Visit Skiathos, a lush island oasis with more than 60 beaches along 27 miles of coastline to explore. Cruise to the city of the Argonauts, Volos—considered one of the country’s prettiest cities—before sailing on to Thessaloniki, the cultural capital of Greece. Among its many Roman, Ottoman, and Sephardic Jewish structures, you’ll also find numerous notable Paleo-christian and Byzantine monuments.

Set your gaze on Kavala, a beautiful whitewashed city crowned by a 15th century Byzantine castle and framed by fantastic beaches. In the ancient Turkish port of Ephesus, discover the beautiful Library of Celsus, the Odeon, the Amphitheater where St. Paul preached, and the house where Mary, Mother of Jesus, once lived.

One of the best-preserved medieval cities in all of Europe and a popular UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rhodes offers sandstone buildings, the cobblestoned Street of the Knights, and charming turreted buildings. Enjoy a late stay here before journeying to the charming, sun-soaked island of Santorini for one last day of adventure.

Highlights of this cruise:

Athens
Start your journey in Piraeus with an archaeological walk past landmarks like the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Ancient Agora, and of course, the Acropolis. Afterwards, head to the Central Market for a feast of fresh fruit and veggies, nuts, olives, and Grecian cheese. Finally, check out a local taverna where you can rub elbows with the locals well into the wee hours of the night.

Skiathos
A small island surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea, Skiáthos is part of the Sporades archipelago and features many inlets, capes, villas and endless stretches of picture-perfect beaches.

Volos
Dating back to the Neolithic age and famed as the mythical “City of the Argonauts”, Volos is a modern city in the heart of Greece, and is a place of immense natural beauty and numerous archaeological sites.

Kavala
Clinging to the foothills of Mt. Symvolo, the city of Kavala (“the heart of Eastern Macedonia”) rises like an amphitheater out of the sea, with historical monuments and buildings almost too plentiful to list.

Kusadasi
Kusadasi has many charms, but let’s talk Turkey: The star attraction is Ephesus. Once the second largest city in the Roman Empire, its marble-made Arcadian Street stretches from the 24,000-capacity Great Theatre (where St. Paul used to preach) to the harbor. Nearby sites include the Temple of Artemis, Basilica of St. John, and House of Virgin Mary, where Mary is supposed to have spent her last days.

Rhodes
First on your agenda should be the Rhodes waterfront where once stood the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Just a short ride away, the medieval town of Lindos features houses stacked like giant sugar cubes on a steep hill. Hitch a donkey ride to the acropolis at the top for spectacular views of the town and Saint Paul’s Bay.
